Lois and Clark continue to investigate Chloe's murder/disappearance; Lionel and Lex continue their blood feud; Lana returns to Smallville.

What's up with Lois: Clark and Lois investigate the charred remains of Chloe's safe house. While they talk about what happened, a helicopter flies over and drops off two commandoes. They attack Clark as Lois runs. Clark easily dispatches them, then uses his heat vision to disable the chopper. Lois fends off the final attacker with some impressive moves and the two run off. The next day she digs up her cousins grave and is relieved to find it empty. As she dusts off a man asks where Chloe is, when she tells him off, he turns his hand into a metallic blade and attacks her.

What's up with Lana: In Paris, Lana, looks at pictures from the caves and finds that her tattoo matches one of the symbols from their walls. When Lana returns to Smallville she goes to visit Lex. She'd like to rent the apartment above the old Talon... and she's not interested in anything to do with Clark. She meets Lois after saving her life by chasing off the man with the metallic hands.

What's up with Clark: Lana and Lois head to the farm and surprise Clark. He welcomes Lana home and learns of her "hot summer fling" from Lois. As he begins to confide in Lois about his feelings for Lana, another helicopter flies over the barn. Enter Sam Lane. Lois' father just happens to be a 3-star general! He's been keeping an eye on Lois, making sure she doesn't get into trouble.

What's up with Lex: Clark heads to the mansion to confront Lex about Chloe. He wants Lex's help but he still doesn't like him. Lex tells him Chloe's dead, but Clark spots a cigar that he knows is Sam Lane's and realizes Lex is lying to him. After Clark and Lois break into her father's office and find out that Chloe is being held under an alias, Clark rushes to the house she's suppose to be at. When he gets there he finds two dead men and his ex-friend Lex Luthor.

What's up with Lionel: Lionel threatens Lex's life while in prison, telling him he won't know when or where, but it will happen. However, it's the elder Luthor who's life is threatened when he's stabbed by an inmate while taking a shower. While in the hospital recovering, Lionel gets a visitor. Surprise, metallic blade guy works for Lionel! His name's Trent and he's looking for more money.

How it ends up: Trent hasn't killed Chloe yet, but Lionel convinces him to go back and finish the job. The men he killed were hired by Lex to protect Chloe. Turns out Lex engineered her fake death to protect her and since he couldn't trust the FBI, he called on Sam Lane to orchestrate her protection. Lex also put a tracking device on her and tells Clark where she's being held. Clark arrives in time to battle Trent, but it takes Lois' surprise entrance and help to finish Trent off, who explodes into a metallic ooze.

With Chloe alive and able to testify, Lionel is found guilty! The Kents tell Clark he should give Lex another chance, he did save Chloe's life, but Clark isn't buying it, Lex has always lied to him, and besides, the prophecy tells of one true enemy... Clark now thinks it's Lex.

In the caves, Clark finds Lana, who's looking for the symbol. When she gets back to the Talon, Jason is there. Lana only left him a short note when she bolted for home. He wants answers, she tells him she can't say why she's here and she still has feelings for him, but she can't go back. That's ok, he's not looking to take her back, just to be with her.
OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:
CLARK AND LOIS INVESTIGATE CHLOE'S MURDER

Lois suspects that Sam knows more about Chloe's death than he will admit, and Clark discovers that Sam has recently been in contact with Lex (Michael Rosembaum). Jason (Jensen Ackles) arrives from Paris and convinces Lana (Kristin Kreuk) to continue their relationship. Suspecting that Chloe is still alive, Lionel (John Glover) sends an assassin with the power to morph his limbs into metallic weapons to keep Chloe from testifying against him.

John Schneider and Annette O'Toole also star. James Marshall directed the episode written by Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders

QUOTES:
Lois (to Clark): Get over yourself. You're just not that complicated.

Lois (to Clark): Remind me if I'm ever a witness, don't put my life in the hands of the FBI.

Lois (to Clark): Nothing like a little 'North by Northwest' action...

Lois (to Clark): So the Eagle Scout does have a few secrets in the closet.

Lois: Really crashed and burned on that one.
Clark: Must be a daily ritual with you.
Lois: Only when I'm barreling into a train wreck.

Lois (to Clark): Besides, my delicate feminine sensibilities weren't offended the first time I got a glimpse of your "Clark Junior."

Lois (to Jonathan and Martha): Your non-verbals are killing me.

Jonathan (to Sam): My heart's not what it used to be.

Lex (to Lionel): Waste of a new suit, isn't it Dad?

Lionel (to Lex): You'll never have another moments peace.

Lana: I guess Paris just wasn't for me.
Lex: Yeah, museums, late-night jazz clubs, walks along the Seine - I can see how that all gets boring.
Lana: Let's just say I felt like something was calling me home.

Lois (to Trente): The posse couldn't get me so they sent you. You can both kiss my *ss.

Lana (to Lois): Funny, I don't remember asking about Clark.

Lois: Really? You two?
Clark: We never...
Lana: Not really...
Clark: ...had a thing. It's complicated.
Lois: The awkward tension is just getting started.

Lois (to Clark): Lana...cute, smart, gusty. And way too much for you to handle. I can see why you're in love with her.

Lex (to Agent Stackard): Are you trying to tell me someone ripped the door off my plane?

Lex: Does this mean you're talking to me again?
Clark: Only because I have no choice.

Lex (to Clark): Look, I'd like to set things straight between us, Clark, but don't you think raising someone from the grave is setting the bar a little high?

Lex (to Clark): The reason Chloe's casket is empty is because there wasn't anything left... I'm sorry Clark.

Lionel: Well done, Lex, but wasn't it you who warned me, don't wound what you can't kill?

Clark (to Lois): Wow! And I thought my father was overprotective.

Clark: I'm sorry.
Lois: Don't be. Unless you're the one who got her hooked on cigaretes in the sixth grade behind the school gym.

Lois (to Clark): Chloe always told me this town was weird. I don't know how you ever survived without me.

Martha (to Clark about Lex): Ever since he met you he's been surrounded by things he can't explain. I guess we can't really blame him for trying to find the truth.

Chloe: Tomorrow morning in court, I'm going to kick Lionel's butt.

Lana: You and Lois...?
Clark: Lois? She's bossy, she's stuck up, she's rude. I can't stand her!
Lana: The best ones always start out that way.

Lana: Do you believe in destiny?
Clark: I don't want to.

Jason (to Lana): I'm freaking you out with the whole Cary Grant moment, aren't I?

Jason (to Lana): I didn't come here to get you. I came here to be with you.

RECAP:
Lois and Clark go to the sight of the explosion to investigate Chloe's death, but a helicopter arrives and drops off some men. Clark defeats them and crashes the helicoptor with his heat vision while Lois defeats a third man and they both flee as a military officer with "Lane" on his uniform steps out and orders his remaining man to find them.

Lois has moved in with the Kents and she and Clark have dueling shower privileges, which leads to them having an awkward conversation with Jonathan and Martha spots them, which in turns leads to a discussion about Clark crashing the helicoptor. Lex has another enigmatic conversation with Lionel about how he can no longer trust anything. In Paris, Lana notices the similarity between the symbol on her back and returns to Smallville and meets with Lex, renting the apartment over the Talon.

Lois goes to dig up Chloe's grave and confirm Clark's assertion - she finds the grave empty and is then attacked by a mysterious man who can turn his hand into a weapon. Lana shows up and rescues her and the man escapes. The two of them meet up with Clark and awkwardness ensues. Later in the barn, Lois and Clark are talking when the helicoptor returns and the army officer shows up...who Lois introduces as her dad.

General Lane leaves shortly thereafter and Clark confronts Lex, who denies everything...but one of Lane's cigars is present. While Clark and Lois separately break into the nearby military base, Lionel is almost killed by a fellow prisoner in the shower. Lois and Clark discover that Lois' father is meeting with a "Nellie Bly" weekly and Clark concludes it is Chloe. He goes to the address only to find dead FBI agents and Lex.

Lex tells him everything, and reveals that thanks to a tracking bracelet he knows Chloe is at a nearby factory. In prison, Lionel meets with the assassin, Trent. Trent tries to hold him up for more money but Lionel lays a little father-imaging on him and the killer goes off to dispose of Chloe. Clark speeds to the factory and stops the killer as he prepares to off Chloe. Lois hits Trent with an electro-stunner and with a little secret assist from Clark's heat vision, knocks him into a smelting pit.

Lionel is convicted on Chloe's testimony and Clark is more convinced then ever that Lex is the great evil who is prophesied to battle him, despite Jonathan and Martha's doubts. He then meets Lana in the cave, who is there to investigate the symbol on her back. Lex is there to gloat as Lionel goes into the general prison population, and Lana's boyfriend Jason follows her to Smallville so they can be together.

    GUILTY!

Jury Returns Verdict in High Profile Case

    By Caroline Dries

After Chloe Sullivan's damning testimony yesterday, Metropolis titan Lionel Luthor was found guilty of murdering his parents in a tenement fire. Luthor's attorney Gwendolyn Reed's case was shattered by the surprising return of Sullivan who was presumed dead just forty-eight hours ago. Reed rushed out of the courthouse without her confident swagger. She promised to appeal the jury's "idiotic decision."

The key evidence existed in a ten-second sound bite obtained by Sullivan in which Luthor admitted to the murder.

"Did you order Morgan Edge to kill your parents?" Chloe asked after activating the voicemail on her hidden Verizon cell phone.

"Of course," said Luthor. "Their life insurance provided the seed money I needed to start my company."

The confession was enough to get the jury's unanimous guilty verdict.

Luthor's son Lex was among the many attendees crammed into the at-capacity courtroom. Witnesses claim to have seen the emotionally reserved Lex breathe a sigh of relief after the jury announced its decision. "It's over and we can all move on with our lives," he said before he slid into his Carrera. With his father now behind bars, Lex will now officially assume Lionel Luthor's former role as CEO of LuthorCorp.

Sullivan fielded questions on the courthouse steps. "It took a lot of stars to line up just right in order for us to get Lionel Luthor behind bars," Sullivan said. "Oh, and P.S., those of you who bounced early at my wake -- ya missed a stellar cheese tray."
